DANCE OF THE 'WILD' FLOWERS!
by Sharon L. Schlotzhauer
Aurora, CO
"This is the 8th quilt in my whimsical, dimensional, ‘Wild’ Flowers! series. The flowers are wild in the sense of being crazy, 'out-there' - not realistic. I designed this piece to conform to others in the series meaning it had to be dimensional, colorful, and sparkly. Beadwork and Swarovski crystals are found on the backside as well. I think the ‘broken’ border design makes it a bit more interesting and out of the ordinary. A dear friend thought it looked like the flowers were dancing - and thus it was named."

THE FIRST PEOPLE, CHUMASH
by Linda Boynton de Sepulveda
Montecito, CA
"The Chumash nation extended from Mailbu to San Luis Obispo in the North. From the Channel Island in the west to Mount Pinos in the east. The first people arrived over 13,000 years ago and numbered over 30,000. Through centuries of exposure to disease, slavery, genocide the population is less than 10,000 presently. Today with the help of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash opportunities to preserve the language, basketry, flint knapping, tomol construction and boating skills, food preparation, songs, dancing, preservation of natural resources have been keys to the survival of our culture."

CASCADE OF COLOR
by Andrew Delekta
Charlotte, NC
"This quilt features two central blocks inspired by Judy Martin’s Ultimate Book of Quilt Block Patterns (1988), surrounded by flying geese that symbolize movement and direction. Created for the Hoffman Batik Challenge, the design highlights the vibrant textures and colors of batik fabrics, contrasted with a deep black background to enhance their luminosity. The quilting was done softly to let the fabrics shine, allowing their vibrant patterns to take center stage. The bold geometry and dynamic patterns evoke a sense of energy and harmony, celebrating the artistry of both traditional and contemporary quilting."

AMISH STRIPE
by Rachel Siegel
Lebanon, PA
”Although I love purples and greens, they don’t usually “work” with my décor’s colonial flair. So, inspired by the Spectrum batik, I rounded out the 1895 batiks in the challenge group with reds, to end up with a more “Amish quilt” color-scheme set against a deep violet background. The Roman Stripe blocks were paper pieced, one column at a time. The inspiration batik makes a featured appearance as a border tying everything together. I free-motion-quilted linear geometric shapes intermingled with traditional feathers on my sit-down machine as a nod to “traditional meets modern” feel of the quilt."

EVERY SCRAP COUNTS
by Yael Karabelnik
Mission Viejo, CA
"At the end of a larger fabric project, oddly shaped bits and pieces remain. This coordinating notepad cover and pen set are made from such scraps (even using pieces as narrow as 1/8 of an inch). Figuring out a pleasing arrangement from small remnants is a fun challenge; the design is revealed by the fabric itself and the end-result is a surprise each time. The most rewarding part is sharing these made with love creations with others. I am grateful to follow the quilting/sewing traditions of creating useful items from fabric. "

Category: Mixed Techniques

"Quilt is my first attempt at creating my own pattern. It utilized thread painting techniques that I learned from Aurifil artist, Sophie Standing and techniques related to patterning and piecing inspired by Sandra Mollon. The contest fabrics inspired me to think about things that are so deeply black that they reflect colors. The beautiful water color fabrics within the contest collection aided me in translate these reflections on Lenore, a raven that appears in front of the moon."
